Prior to removing, you can verify that ~/.config/monitors.xml exists and has the configuration causing Gnome to show the error.

Open a terminal, and run the following:

-f ~/.config/monitors.xml && rm ~/.config/monitors.xml

That could also be a simple deletion of ~/.config/monitors.xml, but it’s more fun that way.
